Russia has been stripped of a relay gold medal from the 2008 Beijing Olympics by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) after one of its female runners tested positive for steroids in a reanalysis of her doping samples.
Sprinter Yulia Chermoshanskaya tested positive for two drugs – stanozolol and turinabol – and was retroactively disqualified in the women’s 4×100-meter relay, along with her teammates, the International Olympic Committee said.
Belgium stands to be upgraded to the relay gold, with Nigeria moving up to silver and Brazil to bronze.
The Nigeria female relay team that ran at the final of the event are Franca Idoko, Gloria Kemasuode, Halimat Ismaila, Oludamola Osayomi. The IOC has told the International Association of Athletics Federations to modify the results and take any further action against the athlete. Nigeria won 4 medals including 1 silver and 3 bronze at the tournament in various event which includes the Men’s soccer, Taekwondo (Men’s over 80kg), track and field (women’s 4x100m relay) and women’s Long Jump.
