*As BoT Meets In Abuja Today On Crisis Resolution
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may have bowed to reason on its drive to address its lingering problem of factionalisation, just as the leaders have started to consider a middle ground approach for addressing the party’s problems. Part of the problems, it was gathered, is to raise a new team comprising the representatives of factional leaders, Ali Modu Sherif and Ahmed Makarfi with intent to start fresh preparations for conduct of the National Convention of the PDP.
The new thinking in PDP, according to findings will form the kernel of discussion at a meeting of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) scheduled for Abuja later today and to be presided over by the Chairman, Senator Walid Jibrin.
Indications to this effect emerged as the governors of the PDP are said to have resolved to put a stop to the lingering crises within the PDP while prevailing on their two most visible colleagues, Nyesome Wike and Ayodele Fayose to allow the BoT to take charge of the party’s affairs for now.
The PDP had made two failed attempts at conducting its National Convention and had resolved to suspend the process for one year after security operatives prevented the last attempt at the Sharks Stadium Port Harcourt from taking effect.
Although the Convention Committee, headed by the governor of Rivers State allowed Ahmed Makarfi to remain and continue to hold forte for the PDP for the next one year, indications are rife that the PDP will begin to look beyond his Committee with plans to raise a new team to bring the two factions of the party on a round table for solution.
There are reports that Wike had already started talking with the Modu Sheriff who has been insisting that the Convention of the party be taken out of Port Harcourt and to be held in Abuja under an open and transparent atmosphere.
It is not likely that either Sheriff or Makarfi will throw their hats in the ring to contest the chairmanship position even if the issue of the next convention of the party is fully resolved. It was learnt that a Report filed by the BoT constituted Reconciliation Committee, led by Professor Jerry Gana, after its meeting with Modu Sheriff had recommended that Both Sheriff and Makarfi be allowed to co-chair the PDP Convention in the interest of peace, whereas the leaders of the party failed to make use of the recommendation before the Port Harcourt Convention, perhaps due to time factor.
The Jerry Gana Committee had tabled the Report before the BoT just two days before the last botched national convention of the party in Port Harcourt, Rivers State on August 17.
The Report read in part, “Agree on co-chairmen to preside over the convention Planning Committee; ensure a credible, transparent and superbly organised convention to produce highly qualified and suitable national officers through a process of free, fair and highly credible elections.
“Both Senator Ahmed Makarfi and Senator Ali Modu Sheriff to address the national convention, with Senator Ahmed Makarfi declaring the convention open as convention chairman and Senator Sheriff to hand over to the new chairman after the elections.
“Party’s national convention to be shifted from Port Harcourt to Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, but the convention should still hold on Wednesday, August 17, 2016.”
Indications are rife that Sheriff may accept the outcome of the scheduled meeting of the BoT in the event of recommendation that the next Convention of the Party be held in Abuja, while he is to play a major role. He had told the Jerry Gana’s Reconciliation Committee that while he would love to give peace a chance in PDP, he would not accept any condition likely to displeased him and his supporters.
