Edo 2016: Obaseki Dispels Rumours of Islamising Edo, Says ‘Malicious Allegation’

The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the September 10 governorship election in Edo, Godwin Obaseki, has dispelled the insinuation making the rounds in Benin that he intends to Islamise the state if elected Governor, describing it as mudslinging and a calculated attempt by the opposition to smear his name.
He said there was no time the issue of religion came up during his campaign across the state, saying “they have continued to fabricate one malicious allegation after the other, peddling wicked rumours against the person of Godwin Obaseki.”
A statement, Friday, by the Godwin Obaseki Campaign Organisation said: “The attention of the Godwin Obaseki Campaign Organisation has been drawn to the mindless propaganda by the opposition to the effect that the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the September 10 Edo gubernatorial elections, Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki, plans to Islamise the state when elected governor.
“All through this campaign – in their desperation to cause disaffection among the Edo electorate – they have continued to fabricate one malicious allegation after the other, peddling wicked rumours against the person of Godwin Obaseki.
“But we have always ignored their antics, choosing instead to focus our campaign on real issues affecting our people, and practical steps to address them. The Islamisation propaganda, however, is one we cannot afford to ignore. Though cloaked like a message from the hallowed pulpit, it is actually a lie from the pit of hell! Watching the conduct of the major actors closely, particularly the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) flagbearer, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, who is a professed pastor, one wonders how fanning the embers of resentment and promoting religious hatred in the name of politics fall within the tenets of Christianity. Jesus tells his followers in John 13:35: ‘BY THIS ALL WILL KNOW THAT YOU ARE MY DISCIPLES, IF YOU LOVE ONE ANOTHER.’ With Ize-Iyamu’s divisive politics and crude tactics, you are left to ponder whose disciple he is, really: as God is not an author of confusion(?)
“Godwin Obaseki has never claimed to be a Pastor. However, from his growing years in the vicarage (his grandparents set up the first Anglican Church in Benin City) he imbibed the chrsitain virtues of love, respect, humility, selflessness, honesty and sincerity, and continues to live by them till this day.
“For the ‘Doubting Thomases’, consider attending service at St. Mathews Anglican Church, Benin City one Sunday, and when you turn around you just might find that Godwin Obaseki is the one seated on the pew next to you. The Bishop of the Diocese of Benin, Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Rt. Rev. Peter Imasuen, can also attest to this fact.
“So, isn’t it nonsensical and cruel that the PDP would choose to push the Islamisation propaganda against a Christian faithful? No matter how hard these forces of darkness try to muddle things up, Edo people can see beyond the deception; they know the truth!
“The Nigerian constitution is clear on the place of religion in governance, and Godwin Obaseki, when elected governor, will respect the secular nature of Edo State and the nation. All persons, irrespective of their professed faith, shall practice their religion in full freedom, peace and harmony in Edo State.”
