Justice Mojisola Olatoregun of a Federal High Court in Lagos Wednesday struck out a suit filed by a group, Union of Niger Delta Youth Organisation for Equity, Justice and Good Governance, against the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) over alleged “campaign of calumny against Mrs Patience Jonathan, wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan. The suit was struck out following its withdrawal by the plaintiff.
At Wednesday’s proceedings, the plaintiff through their lawyers informed the court that they were no longer interested in pursuing the matter and subsequently applied to discontinue with it. In his submissions, SERAP’s lawyer noted that the case has been a complete waste of the court’s precious time as it ought not to have been filed in the first place. He said: “While we do not object to the request by the Plaintiff’s lawyers for withdrawal of the case, we ask the Honourable Court for N500, 000 as cost against Mrs Jonathan and her group.” A cost of N25, 000 was eventually awarded in favour of SERAP by the court.
