Two Arrested as Army Destroys Illegal Refinery in Edo

Operatives of the 4 Brigade of Nigerian Army, in Benin, Edo state, have arrested two persons at an illegal refinery camp, situated at Obazagbon village, in Uhunmwode Local Government Area of the state.
One of those arrested is a lady who had gone to the illegal refinery with a truck load of gallons apparently to purchase diesel and kerosene.
It was gathered that the large illegal refinery camp had several storage tanks for crude oil which was suspected to have been siphoned from a broken crude oil pipeline belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
There were also other pipes used for distribution of refined products to tankers parked far away from the refinery.
Over 300,000 litres of crude oil and refined products were destroyed at the camp even as the operators had fled before the soldiers arrived.
The Commander of 4 Brigade, Brigadier-General Ibrahim Garba, who led the operation, noted that activities of the operators of the illegal refinery have caused environmental degradation in the forest.
Garba, who urged NNPC management to install sensors on its oil pipelines or use Air Force helicopters for their surveillance, commended members of the public for providing information that led to the discovery of the camp.
He stated that the special force put in place by the army would not tolerate the sabotage of the economy by those he termed mischievous individuals.
He said his men would not abdicate its responsibility of ridding the state of all forms of criminal activities, economic sabotage, kidnapping, assassination and armed robbery.
