Tinubu’s Broadcasting Outfit Offers Reasons for Mass Sack

The management of Continental Broadcasting Services Ltd.(CBS), owners of Television Continental (TVC), and Radio Continental, has offered rationale behind the sack of 145 workers on Friday.
The broadcasting outfit is owned by the National Leader of the All Progressive Congress (APC) and former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
A statement issued by the management of the media outfit said the decision was part of its effort in restructuring the broadcasting house.
It also gave hint of closing down the international arm of the organisation.
The organisation explained that in line with the changes, it would reconfigure its workforce as part of the rationale to achieve its objectives.
“145 people will be affected by today’s announcement,” the statement said.
A statement from Regina Whenu, Associate Consultant, Brooks + Blake, said the restructuring was geared towards repositioning the business for better and greater delivery of its services to audiences and advertisers alike.
“In line with these changes we are reconfiguring our workforce as part of the rationale to achieve our objectives. 145 people will be affected by today’s announcement.
“We wish to make clear that our core channels consisting of TVC News Nigeria, TVC Entertainment and Radio Continental will now become the main focus of our business going forward where we will deliver high quality news and entertainment programmes to our audiences and advertisers across Nigeria and beyond. The winding down of TVC News Africa will allow us concentrate on these key areas of our business.
“The CBS Board of Directors has also approved substantial new investment in our staff across the group of companies which will enable us substantially enhance our news and current affairs output on TVC News, entertainment programming on the market leading TVC general entertainment channel and our key radio asset Radio Continental,” the statement said.
It added that for those staff members affected by the sack, “the Board of CBS Ltd. had approved a generous severance package in addition to a programme of assistance to enable them seek new employment,” it said.
TV Continental and radio are among Nigeria’s top television and radio stations, having carved a niche for themselves in news gathering and entertainment.
They started majorly as a news arm of the APC to counter propaganda from then ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
This was after the former Lagos State Governor had acquired the defunct ‘The Comet’ newspaper, which later transmuted to the Nation newspaper.
The mass sack, it was learnt, was the outcome of Friday’s town hall meeting with the Chief Exevutive Officer of the company.
The broadcasting outfit was said to have invited all staff from across the country for the town hall meeting on Friday where the news was broken to them.
According to the CEO, the sack became imperative because the stations are not commercially viable.
