Garbine Muguruza has won the Wimbledon Ladies Singles title, thrashing five-time former champion Venus Williams 7-5 6-0 and denying the American a sixth title in London.
The Venezuelan-Spanish star capitalised on a string of errors by Venus to win the title, her first in London and her second Grand Slam title.
“Two years ago I lost to Serena and she told me maybe one day I would win. Here I am!”, Muguriza, 23 years old, said at the end of the match.
She almost lost the first set, when she was two points down on her serve, but she rallied to level the scores 5-5. She then went on to break Venus Williams to establish a 6-5 lead and clinch the set.
She was unstoppable from this point onwards in the second set, when she broke Venus at the start of the game. She raced to a 3-0 lead and then broke Venus again and again to make it a bagel.
