PDP: Sheriff Loyalist Rejects Ahmed Makarfi’s Amnesty

A loyalist of the deposed Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), in Edo State, E. J. Agbonnayinma, has rejected the olive branch offered by the Supreme Court-certified Chairman of the party, Ahmed Makarfi.
Agbonnayinma, who spoke on Saturday in Benin, during a stakeholder meeting with party faithful, said members of the Ali Modu Sheriff faction of the party will not in any way accept any amnesty proposed by Ahmed Makarfi.
The lawmaker who represents Egor/Ikpoba-Okha Federal constituency at the House of Representatives, said amnesty could only be given to militants and not to a man who has not committed any crime, but was called upon to serve his party.
“You can only give amnesty to someone, either a militant or someone who committed crime. In this case, amnesty does not arrive. This is part of the impunity I am talking about.
“You are asking someone that you went to beg to rescue PDP, when PDP was down and he came and did all that he could to save the party and you are telling him that you want to give him amnesty?
“I do not like people who use people and dumped them. Now, let the truth be told, Ali Modu Sheriff is not on trial. We do not need amnesty,” he said.
Agbonnayinma said following the litigations in court, various reconciliation committees were set up which included the Prof. Jerry Gana reconciliation committee, Governor Seriake Dickson committee and former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, which Ali Modu Sheriff agreed to their recommendations, even when he had the upper hand as the authentic chairman of the party, following the judgements from the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal.
According to him, Sheriff declared a policy of ‘no victor no vanquished,’ adding that with reversal of the the judgement of the lower courts by the Supreme Court, one would have expected that they become team players, rather than proposing amnesty, setting up disciplinary committee and dissolving the State excos.
“Rather than preaching unification, they decided to engage themselves with derogatory statements and insults to Senator Ali Modu Sheriff and his followers. I will not remain docile while the democratic norms and values we cherish are being systematically truncated and destroyed,” he said.
The federal lawmaker alleged that the party is being run by a few cabals to the detriment of majority of party members, as equity, sincerity, fair play and transparency was alien in the administration of the party by the same few cabals in the party.
He said the founding principles of the party have been rejected for the selfish interest of the few people who perpetrate impunity and betrayed the party.
He also lamented that despite the huge population of the people of Edo South senatorial district, no leaders from that district is in the national body, either in the national executive council or national working committee of the party and invitations to stakeholder meetings at the national headquarters is never extended to them
He also faulted the way and manner Matthew Iduoriyekemwen was treated, which he said led to his exit from the party, adding that if his commitment and loyal to the party could be rewarded in such manner, he wondered what could be his fate in the party.
“It is regrettable that our leader and brother, most beloved Hon. Matthew Aigbuhuenze Iduoriyekemwen, resigned from the party after over 19 years of uninterrupted selfless service to the party.
“We owe him so much for his support in all our electoral fortunes at the polls and the dividend of democracy he has brought to the door step of our people. He is a man who stood for justice and equity. We all are beneficiaries of his political benevolence.
“I wish to use this medium to once again thank him for all the support he gave me. I believe God will give us the opportunity to work together again in the near future. The party will certainly miss this great man of political sagacity and integrity.
“It is unfortunate that from the way he was treated, it shows that loyalty to the party does not pay. I do not know what tomorrow holds for me and my supporters in the party only time will tell.
“This impunity must stop now or many party faithful will go the same way of our leader, Hon. Matthew Iduoriyekemwen,” he said.
