Atiku Abubakar Joins in ‘EndSARS Campaign’ on Twitter as Police Promise Action

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has joined other Nigerians in the #EndSARS campaign on Twitter.
The #EndSARS campaign was set up to stop atrocities committed by the Police Special Anti-Robbery Squad and call for its scrapping.
Atiku Abubakar on his Twitter handle @atiku said the arbitrary harassment of young Nigerians by Police, who should be protecting them, has no place in a democratic society.
The #EndSARS campaign as at 2pm on Sunday was number one on Twitter. And it was immediately followed by over 400,000 tweets on the Police themselves.
In posts after posts, Nigerians recounted horrible, harrowing encounters with SARS, the dreaded squad of the police, set up to fight banditry.
Often, the men went off course to torment innocent Nigerians.
Allegations of extra-judicial killings, torture, wanton arrests for bribes and other menacing conducts flooded social media, demanding action.
They argued that the department, which was launched in early 2000s to combat armed robbery and other criminal activities, has become too contaminated to be reformed.
In a swift response to the ban call, the police promised to address the widespread abuses by officers of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, amidst the complaints by Nigerians .
Assistant police spokesperson, Aliyu Giwa, wrote on Twitter, Sunday: “Disheartening seeing some officers acting uncivilised and unruly. I sympathise with Nigerians who must have found themselves in such situations and believe me the authority is not happy about it!
“Trust me the authority have (sic) taken actions on this issue,” he added.
