Truck Driver Burnt Beyond Recognition in Early Morning Accident

A truck driver lost his life in a fatal auto crash that occured in the early hours of Friday in Benin, Edo state.
The crash occured along the Benin-Lagos Expresdway, in front of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) when truck laden with fuel
veered off its lane, fell and exploded in fire.
According to eye witnesses the truck fell while trying to avoid an oncoming vehicle said to be driving against traffic.
It was alleged that the truck also hit a Mercedes Benz Wagon conveying bags of rice from Lagos.
The truck driver whose identity could not be ascertained, got trapped under the truck and got burnt beyond recognition, while his assistance escaped by the whiskers.
Also, the Mercedes Benz car conveying the rice got burnt completely, while the driver’s whereabouts are unknown as the time of filing this report.
Efforts by fire fighters to put out the wild fire was complicated by the fuel gushing out from the truck.
Fire from the crash affected a nearby car dealer’s shop where about eight imported used vehicles were affected.
Fire fighters from the University of Benin, (UNIBEN), UBTH and Nigerian Army finally put fire under control.
Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, who visited the accident scene at about 10am, cautioned drivers on driving against traffic.
He said the accident could have been avoided if only the rules and regulations on safe driving were obeyed.
