Bomb Explosion Rocks Nigeria’s Police HQ


The security situation in Nigeria has again become the topic of serious debates with the devastating explosion that rocked the Louis Edet Building, Abuja which serves as the headquarters of the Nigerian Police Force.
The explosion left many dead also damaged about 73 vehicles in the parking lot of the police headquarters as it caused a huge inferno which took firemen some time to subdue. The explosion has also done a lot to the image of Nigeria’s security agencies as many more Nigerians are beginning to wonder how safe the country is if such mishap could befall the police despite the existence of an anti- bomb squad, sniffer dogs and other security measures.
Confirming the incident, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said the site of the explosion was the visitor’s parking lot. Though the actual number of casualties could not be ascertained as at the time of filing this report, police sources put the figure at three while scores were injured. Body parts were scattered on the scene. Members of the Red Cross and other agencies came on the scene to pack dead bodies while they also helped in taking the injured to the Asokoro General Hospital.
Police sources revealed that the bomb was detonated from a vehicle that followed the convoy o the Inspector General of Police into the Headquarters. Seeing that the driver of the vehicle was in mufti, the vehicle was reportedly stopped and led to the parking lot in order to question the occupants. The questioning was already in progress and was being handled by an Assistant Superintendent of Police said to be in charge of traffic in the Force Headquarters. He and the occupants of the car were killed as the bomb went off.
The Islamic extremist group, Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for the attack.
