Nigeria’s Wife Battering Ambassador To Be Retired

These are definitely not the best of times for Ambassador Wilcox Chijioke Wigwe; Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Kenya and Ambassador to Seychelles who was recently recalled from his mission after news made the rounds that he battered his wife to the point of hospitalization. Street Journal’s investigations have revealed that the embattled Ambassador might soon be eased out of the diplomatic service. Findings have shown that apart from the domestic violence issue that has put him in trouble; one other thing that may not work in Dr. Wigwe’s favour is age. He is said to have reached the mandatory retirement age of sixty years. Street Journal gathered that the retirement would be hinged on the age factor but it is almost an open secret that it is based on the “embarrassment” his domestic violence saga has brought to his home country.
Street Journal has also found out that Dr. Wigwe’s recall might have done a lot in preventing further damage to Nigeria’s reputation. This is because Kenyan authorities have already indicated the willingness to press charges. Though he had diplomatic immunity, sources have disclosed that the authorities in Kenya have continually expressed the opinion that he should be brought to book.
Investigations revealed that just before the dissolution of the last Federal Executive Council, the then foreign Minister, Odein Ajumogobia had written a memo to the President in which he recommended Wigwe for retirement based on the attainment of the retirement age. The Ambassador was born on the 6th June, 1951.
The Foreign Service and the Federal Civil Service are governed by the same rules and the rules put the retirement age at 60 years. A person may also proceed on retirement when he/she has put in 35 years of service.
Ambassador Wigwe and his wife have been married for more than three decades and they have 5 grandchildren.
