The Former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Malam Nasir El-Rufai was this morning picked up by operatives of the State Security Service. He was picked up on arrival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja around 6.30 am.
El-Rufai was the first to broadcast his own arrest and detention as he posted it on Twitter, a social network. Street Journal followed his messages from there. The first one he tweeted immediately he was picked up was “Got detained by the SSS on arrival at Abuja Airport. No reason given. On our way to the Headqurters. Will keep you posted if phones not seized”.
On his arrival at the SSS Headquarters, El-Rufai tweeted again “arrived safely at SSS HQ. They are polite and courteous, so far…”
Around 8 am, there came another tweet from the former Minister’s Twitter handle that read “Inside the building waiting for the Director to arrive. I still have my phones but under watch by 3 polite SSS officers. Stand by”. He also notified the world when he was led upstairs as he tweeted “Taken up three floors to see the DG. He was my director of security in FCT, 2003…decent man then, will soon know if fresh air has got him.”
Contact with Malam Nasir El-Rufai was however lost when he announced that his phone battery was getting drained. The last message received from him came in around 8.40 am, it read “”Phone battery going down…no tweets until i charge….sorry guys, ladies.” About ten minutes before then, he sent a message to a tweeter account B_ELRUFAI that read “… do not worry, all will be well…thanks”.
It is being insinuated in some quarters that El-Rufai might have been picked up to answer some questions over some of his statements regarding the last elections and the violence that followed it.
