Ekweremadu Is New ECOWAS Parliament Speaker


Nigeria’s Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu has been voted in as the new Speaker of the Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Ekweremadu who was unanimously adopted by Nigeria’s delegation to the parliament was also unanimously elected by the 87 members in attendance for a four-year tenure. The election took [place after the inauguration of the Third Legislature of the ECOWAS Parliament by President Goodluck Jonathan, the Chairman of ECOWAS.

The new Speaker promised to build a leadership based on mutual trust, respect, accountability and transparency. In his acceptance speech, Senator Ekweremadu told his colleagues to prepare for more collaborative work with other ECOWAS organs in order to find answers to the many challenges being faced by member states.
