Michael Jackson’s Doctor Gets 4-Year Jail Term

Michael Jackson’s doctor, Conrad Murray, was on Tuesday sentenced to four years imprisonment for complicity in the death of the famed King of Pop.

Conrad Murray was convicted of involuntary manslaughter earlier in November after a six-week trial. Revelations were made about how the musician died and how Murray, his personal physician had administered propofol, a powerful anaesthetic on the musician to enable him sleep.

In strong terms, Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor condemned Murray’s action and described it as a “horrific violation of trust”.

In the course of the investigations into the singer’s death, Murray told detectives he had been giving Jackson nightly doses of propofol to help him sleep as he prepared for a series of comeback concerts. Propofol is supposed to be used in surgeries in hospital settings and has never been approved for sleep treatments. Murray however acknowledged that he gave it to Michael Jackson and he was not in the room when the popular musician died.

Murray declined to testify during his trial but participated in a documentary in which he said he didn’t consider himself guilty of any crime and blamed Jackson for entrapping him into administering the drug.

Prosecutors based their call for maximum punishment for Murray on the statements he made. They also demanded that the embattled physician should pay restitution to the singer’s three children — Prince, Paris and Blanket. It’s unlikely that Murray can pay any sizable sum, as the demands included the $1.8 million cost of Jackson’s funeral as well as the gains he would have made from the concert that had to be cancelled as a result of his death. .Investigations revealed that Murray was heavily indebted when he agreed to serve as Jackson’s personal physician for $150,000 a month. The singer however died before Murray received any money.

Murray’s mother and girlfriend also attended the sentencing hearing. After the sentence was pronounced, Murray was seen saying “I love you” to both women.

Sheriff’s officials in L.A. County have disclosed that Murray will serve about two years of his four-year sentence. Under California state law nonviolent felons serve only half of their sentences.
