PHCN Workers Down Tools!

Members of staff of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria on Tuesday locked up their offices across the country in protest over the proposed privatization of the company by the Federal Government.

Street Journal’s correspondents visited PHCN installations this morning and the ones in Jericho and Ring Road, Ibadan were kept locked while members of staff stayed outside the gate where they engaged in conversations. Street Journal also gathered that the situation was the same in Warri, Port Harcourt, Umuahia and many other places as it was a well planned nationwide action.

A member of staff who spoke to Street Journal at the Capital Building office of the PHCN in Ring Road, Ibadan disclosed that the directive came from Abuja and that from Tuesday; workers should not be allowed into offices. The official who spoke on condition of anonymity pointed out that the aggrieved workers were protesting the proposed privatization of the establishment as well as the non-implementation of the 50% salary increment promised them by the Federal Government.

Some customers who were at the office to pay their electricity bills were disappointed as there was no one to attend to them.
