Farouk Abdulmutallab was on Thursday sentenced to life imprisonment. His road to prison started on Christmas Day in 2009 when he concealed a bomb in his underwear and boarded a Detroit bound plane. The device however failed to explode, though it produced a flame and smoke which alerted other passengers and he was eventually subdued and the flames extinguished.
In a defiant move, he pleaded guilty and described the bomb he carried as a “blessed weapon” with which he intended to avenge the many Muslims who had been killed across the world. He told the court that “the Quran obliges every able Muslim to participate in jihad”.
