. How  Job Seekers Nailed Him

An Abuja based Pentecostal Church Pastor; Bitrus Bakkat has been given a 21-year-jail term by a Nasarawa State High Court sitting in Lafia for defrauding two job seekers of a total sum of N.2 million.

The presiding judge, Justice S. Aboki ruled that the sentence would be without an option of fine and apart from jailing the pastor, Justice Aboki also ordered him to pay back the total sum extorted from the hapless job seekers.

The “Man of God” had collected a total sum of N 205,000 from one Messrs Ugwuezeh Obinna and Philip Adejoh in May 2011 on the pretext that he would secure jobs for their relations at the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The Pastor’s trouble however began when he could not secure the promised jobs.  When Bakkat failed to deliver, he was reported to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). He was investigated, arrested and arraigned before the court on a three count charge of fraud. He entered a “not guilty” plea; he was however convicted upon trial and sentenced to 7 years imprisonment on each of the three counts. But the judge held that the sentence should run concurrently.
