Ondo Election Tribunal Latest: PDC Withdraws Petition!

As the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Akure, Ondo State resumed on Thursday, a new twist emerged as the Peoples Democratic Change withdrew its petition challenging the victory of Dr. Olusegun Mimiko at the October 20, 2012 governorship election in Ondo State. Sequel to the withdrawal, the petition was thus struck out by the tribunal.

The PDC and its candidate, Victor Oluwafemi Adetusin had approached the tribunal to challenge Governor Mimiko’s election claiming that the absence of its logo on the ballot papers used for the election caused it to lose a lot of votes to the Labour Party’s candidate as the party had a similar logo to its own.

Adetusin and PDC had alleged in his petition that the Independent National Electoral Commission, which was joined as one of the respondents deliberately and wrongfully, omitted its party’s logo, which was similar to that of the LP and which made many voters who ordinarily, would have voted for him to wrongly vote for the LP candidate Dr. Mimiko.

Adetusin in the 34-page petition filed by his counsels led by Yinka Orokoto, prayed that the votes credited for the LP candidate are his votes and should be counted for him.

All the pending motions are to be argued at the tribunal’s next sitting on Tuesday, January 22, 2013.
