The convicted former Pension Director, John Yusuf created a scene on Monday as he collapsed in court while his case was being heard. Tusuf was dragged before an Abuja High Court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over his failure to truthfully declare his assets. Yusuf failed to declare his interest on a N 250 million fixed deposit which was fixed at Zenith Bank in the name of SY-A Global Services Limited, owned by the accused person. He also did not declare another N 10 million fixed in First Bank.
Yusuf’s lawyer submitted an application for his bailwhich was opposed by the EFCc’s counsel, Rotimi Jacob. He reminded the court that Yusuf had been convicted by a court of law and as such should not be released on bail. Jacob also told the court that it was in the best interest of the accused to be remanded in custody as he could be mobbed on the streets by people who have become angered by his deeds.
As the hearing progressed, Yusuf apparently became uncomfortable and was shaking. He was later given a chair to sit on but after a while, it was observed that he had slumped forward in the dock. He was assisted to a proper sitting posture by his lawyer and a prison official. The court thereafter certified that he was unfit to continue with the trial and the Judge adjourned till April 22 while ruling on the bail application was slated for March 11. The jusge ordered that he should be allowed access to his doctor. .
