The ancient town of Shaki in the Oke Ogun axis of Oyo State was thrown into a mournful mood on Saturday as a result of the demise of the town’s monarch, Oba Kilani Olatoyese Ilufemiloye Olarinre II.

Street Journal gathered that Oba Olarinre joined his ancestors around 2.30 pm on Friday afternoon, though his transition was not announced till midnight. As early as 5 am, the royal palace of the Okere at the Adabo area of the town had become filled with mourners most of who could not believe the news of the death of their beloved monarch, especially as he showed no trace of being ill when he was last seen.

Oba Olarinre II ascended the throne on March 26, 2005 when he succeeded Oba Tijani Abimbola Oyedokun. He was however not given a staff of office until six years after, for reasons known to the government that was in power when he ascended the throne, though that did not in any way reduce the respect accorded him by his subjects.

The staff of office was eventually presented to him on April 7, 2012 at a colourful ceremony which had popular Fuji musician Saheed Osupa on the bandstand.

Oba Olarinre was born in 1953 into the Iji Ojiele ruling house and was of the Biolaotiri Alatise/Olarinre unit of the family. Incidentally, while his father, Oba Olanisa Olarinre I succeeded Oba Oyedokun I as the Okere.
