NUJ Loses 3 Officials in Auto Crash!


The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) lost three of its members in an automobile accident that occurred in Ilesa, Osun State on Friday. Adolphus Okonkwo, the National Financial Secretary of the Union, Kafayat Odunsi of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Tejuosho, Lagos and Tunde Oluwanike, the Chairman of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Ibadan Network Centre Chapel of the NUJ lost their lives in the fatal crash.
Street Journal gathered that the incident occurred around 4 in the evening as the Lagos NUJ bus that conveyed the members approached Osu. Some of the survivors confirmed that the rear tyre of the bus burst, causing the vehicle to veer off the road after which it somersaulted about eight times.
The victims were rushed to the General Hospital in Ilesa from where they were referred to the Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo where the survivors are currently being treated.
The Chairman of the Oyo State Chapter of the NUJ, Comrade Gbenga Opadotun who survived the crash disclosed that the journalists were coming from a meeting in Abuja. He said “when our vehicle got to Osu, the rear tyre of our bus burst and the vehicle veered off the road before we somersaulted about eight to nine times and finally crashed in the bush. It was a terrible experience because we lost three of our members in the accident. The rest of us survived by the grace of God.”
The Chairman of the Osun State Council of the NUJ, Comrade Abiodun Olalere was one of the early callers at the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital.
