President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday inaugurated an advisory committee on the much spoken about national conference.
The committee has been given 6 weeks within which it is to formulate an all-inclusive process that will make all Nigerians contribute towards how they will live together as one.
While speaking at the inauguration, the President said “nations rise to the challenges that each epoch presents. It is imperative therefore, that in our march to nationhood, we have to be dynamic in our approach and response to the problems, even as we seek solutions to them. We cannot proffer yesterday’s solutions to today’s problems’.
The committee is expected to call all relevant stakeholders in order to draw up an agenda for the conference. It will also be making recommendations on the structure, on how representation of the various groups will be determined and advising on the legal framework among others.
The Chairman of the committee, Dr. Femi Okuroumu who thanked the President for taking the bold step of inaugurating the committee noted that government has been sitting on the fence for a long time on the national conference issue.
While Dr Okurounmu is the Chairman, Dr. Akilu Indabawa was appointed as the Secretary, other members include Prof. George Obiozo; Prof. Ben Nwabueze (SAN), Senator Khairat Gwadabe; Senator Timothy Adudu, Col. Tony Nyiam (Rtd) and Prof. Funke Adebayo.
Others members are Dr. (Mrs.) Mairo Amshi, Dr. Abubakar Sadiq, Alhaji Dauda Birma, Mallam Buhari Bello and Mr. Tony Uranta.
