The leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Saturday paid a courtesy call on former President Olusegun Obasanjo. The visit was part of their “consultation” with some political leaders and former Heads of State to discuss the current political situation of the country.
The closed door meeting held at Obasanjo’s Abeokuta home had in attendance former Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, National Leader of the party, Chief Bisi Akande, APC National Chairman; and Lai Mohammed, APC National Publicity Secretary.
Governors in attendance included Rochas Okorocha, Imo State; Muritala Nyako, Adamawa State; Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Kano State; Abdul Fatah Ahmed, Kwara State; Abiola Ajimobi, Oyo State and Senator Ibikunle Amosun, Ogun State.
While receiving the APC leaders, Chief Obasanjo said “I regard this (meeting) as an honour, to come and present your party
and tell me the objectives. But let me start by saying I am a card-carrying member of the PDP, but the politics I play traverse Nigeria, Africa and the world, in that order. I am a
democrat and one of the essential ingredients of democracy is opposition; a democracy that has no opposition built into it is not democracy. As an opposition, you are enhancing democracy. You are at home; you are welcome. As time goes on, I will
just appeal that the politics you play is politics without rancour, without bitterness, with decency, that has Nigeria at heart. I am an incurable optimist about Nigeria; I am totally committed to Nigeria and nothing will divert me from that commitment.”
Speaking further, the former President said “in whichever party, for whatever office that one has contested or aspired in Nigeria
since 1999, such a person, young or old man or woman can claim to be my political child and I can claim to be, by virtue of the political office I have held, I can also claim to be the political father. So, you are here and you are welcome.”
In his remarks, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu said “you (Obasanjo) have come out of tribulation and held the highest position in this country. We are here because of your courage. Nobody can dispute the fact that he has information more than you. You have surmounted a number of crises. Nigeria is now divided more than before. To realise a stable Nigeria, we want to encourage you to continue to speak the truth. We are resolved and determined to rescue Nigeria. We want you as navigator.”
The National Chairman, Chief Akande pleaded with Obasanjo to use his experience and courage to support all progressive-
minded people to work towards the progress, unity and stability of Nigeria.
When Gen Buhari told Obasanjo that APC leaders would come and give him an APC registration form to fill, Obasanjo jokingly responded that he is a loyal member of the PDP, but that if the form is presented, he would accept it “as a matter of courtesy.”
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has been in the news lately with criticisms trailing the open letter he wrote to President Goodluck Jonathan.
