The already tense situation in Maiduguri, the capital of Born State further deteriorated on Saturday evening as explosions rocked the city.
Loud explosions were heard around the Old Airport, Gomari.
The explosions are believed to be the handiwork of members of the Boko Haram terrorist group.
Eyewitnesses disclosed that the explosions occurred at the time when people were preparing for the evening prayers. Buba Mohammed, one of the eyewitnesses disclosed that a firewood truck loaded with explosives was the first to explode. He said the explosion killed a few people. He said the second blast which occurred about 15 minutes after the first one was more devastating as it killed many of those who were trying to assist victims of the first explosion.
The incident has been confirmed by the Borno State Commissioner of Police, Lawal Tanko who at the time of filing this report said “we have counted 35 bodies”. The casualty figure may however increase due to the degree of injuries sustained by some of the survivors.
