Fintiri’s Fate Uncertain As Assembly Convenes Emergency Session

The fate of former Acting Governor of Adamawa State, Mr. Ahmadu Fintiri, appears to hang in the balance following Wednesday’s Abuja Federal High Court ruling, which halted the state’s governorship by-election.
The court had also declared that former Deputy‎ Governor, Mr. Bala Ngilari, should be inaugurated as the substantive replacement for the impeached former Governor Murtala Nyako.
Members of the Adamawa State House of Assembly convened an emergency session on Thursday‎ barely 24 hours after Ngilari took the oath of office in Yola, the state capital, in what was initially thought to be a session to appraise the latest political development.
It was speculated that Fintiri, who was the substantive Speaker before he became the acting governor, would preside over the session‎ to pass the message that he had assumed his original position of Speaker.
However, he did not show up at the session, which was presided over by the Acting Speaker, Mr.‎ Kwamoti La’Ori.
The hurriedly held session, lasted barely 20 minutes and there was neither the mention of the court decision, the inauguration ‎of Ngilari nor the fate of Fintiri on the Order Paper for deliberations.
However, a member representing Michika Constituency, Mr. Adamu Kamale, raised it under “personal explanations” when he got the permission of the speaker.
He made reference to the “recent political development in Adamwa State in which a court ruling replace‎d Fintiri” as the acting governor.
He added that, as law-abiding citizens, members of the House would respect the decision of the court.
But Kamale also made the point that Fintiri was “one of us and gave a very good account of himself in the short period he was the acting governor.”
He said, “Given that he gave a very good account of himself, as‎ his colleagues, we commend his excellent work.”
La’Ore overruled a move to debate the matter on the grounds that under the rules of the House, personal explanations could only be heard but not debated.
The session quickly rose without making any official statement on the issue, neither was any commendation passed on Fintiri.
