The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Saad Abubakar, has declared Friday, July 17 as the Eid el Fitr day, following the sighting of the new moon of Shawwal 1436 AH in about 10 states.
In making the traditional announcement to mark the commencement of the celebration, Abubakar named the states where the moon was sighted as: Kano, Borno, Kaduna, Niger, Sokoto, Nasarawa, Jigawa, Yobe, Bauchi and .Kebbi.
“Consequent upon this, tomorrow Friday, 17th day of July becomes the first day of Shawwal 1436 AH.and the day of the Eid el Fitr,” Abubakar said.
According to the Sultan, the sighting of the new moon was reported by various Muslim leaders and organisations from across the country.
The Sultan said that the sighting of the new moon.was duly verified and authenticated by the National Moon Sighting Committee and that of the Sultanate Council.
He called on.the Muslim faithful to pray for.the peace and unity of Nigeria and to continue to live in harmony with their fellow country men.
