Suspected gunmen have once again launched an attack on a community in Plateau State, this time around on Kwata in Jos South Local Government Area of the state, killing no fewer than 12 residents and wounding several others.
Confirming the incident, Captain Ikedichi Iweha, Spokesman of the Special Task Force (STF) in charge of security in Plateau in the state said at least 12 persons were killed instantly in the attack, while several others were injured.
According to Iweha, the hoodlums carried out their dastardly act at about 9pm at night said, but when security personnel got wind of the attack and rushed to the area the suspected terrorists had disappeared before their arrival.
He said the STF team just evacuated the dead and the injured and rushed them to the Plateau State Specialist Hospital, where health officials confirmed 12 persons dead.
Iweha said that the STF had cordoned off the area, and normalcy had since returned to the area.
Mr Davou Pam, a resident of the community, said the gunmen came at about 8:30 pm and carried out the attack unabated till about midnight.
He said that no fewer than 20 residents died during the attack and urged government and security agents to step up surveillance in the state as a measure to stem future attacks in the state.
The Street Journal recalls that Plateau State communities have over the years been subjected to intermittent attacks by gunmen suspected to be terrorists disguising as herdsmen.
