The Nigerian military has appointed the General Officer Commanding, 3 Division Nigerian Army,Jos, Major-General Hassan Umaru, as the new commander to lead the war against Boko Haram insurgents in the country.
A statement issued by the Director of Defense Information, Brigadier-General Rabe Abubakar, said General Umaru is to take over from Major-General Yusha’u Abubakar,who has been in charge of the war front for the past four months.
According to the statement, Major-General Lucky Irabor has also been appointed as the Deputy Theatre Commander.
It explained that the Defense Headquarters had restructured its ant-insurgency war tagged Operation Lafiya Dole so as “to re-position it for more efficiency, effectiveness and combat readiness in the discharge of its assigned tasks of crushing the remnant of terrorists.”
The statement reads in part: “The changes are part of the re-organisation by the Defense Headquarters in line with the force restructuring of its operations to attain the overall objectives of the Chief of Defense Staff.
“The aim of this new development is to re-strategize and inject new tactics to the existing operational procedures with the aim of finally knocking out the terrorists, who now devise means of hitting soft targets through suicide bombings and isolated attacks on remote villages.”
General Abubakar added that the military operation against the Boko Haram terrorists will remain responsive against all terrorist elements and assured that the insurgents will be crushed before long.
