The candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, who won four out of the five local government areas in the Abia North Senatorial election re-run, has been declared winner of the poll by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Sunday.
The rerun was held, yesterday, Saturday.
He defeated former governor of the state and candidate of the Progressives Peoples Alliance (PPA), Orji Uzor Kalu; Dr. David Onuoha-Bourdex of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and Nnenna Nma Lancaster-Okoro of the All Progressives Congress.
The Returning Officer of INEC, Ojike Nwankpa, said Ohuabunwa polled 26,009 votes to defeat Kalu and Onuoha, who polled 25,814 votes and 13,633 votes respectively.
The candidates of the All Progressives Congress and Labour Party, Nwanna Okoro, and Oji Nwachukwu, polled 976 votes and 147 votes, respectively.
Nwankpa, who announced the result on Sunday, declared Mr. Ohuabunwa the winner for polling the highest number of lawful votes cast.
