Probe Obaseki, Edo PDP Urges Reps, EFCC. I Have no Case with EFCC, Says Obaseki By Isaac Eranga, Benin

The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has called on the House of Representatives and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to probe the winner of Edo APC governorship primaries, Godwin Obaseki over alleged N5.5bn fraud leveled against him.
This call was contained in a petition sent to the House of Representatives over a “complaint of criminal appropriation of the sum of $16m (N5.570,950,000) against the estate of the late Chief Humphery Idisi” and submitted on May 25, 2016, by a Federal Lawmaker from Delta State, Ederin Idisi.
Reports have it that of the 94 million shares allegedly held by a German company, KCA-Deutag, Obaseki allegedly held an equal amount of 36 million in the company, the “trustees of the Nigerian people” held 4.8 million shares while the estate of the late Chief Idisi held 18 million shares.
Speaking to journalists in Benin, the state Chairman of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, said the party’s investigation at the Corporate Affairs Commission had revealed that Obaseki allegedly appropriated to himself the shares of the late Idisi. Orbih stated that, as against an alleged agreement which gave the late man an option of appointing a new chairman, the APC candidate allegedly appropriated to himself the control of 36 million shares in the company.
The state chairman also accused Obaseki of alleged attempts to frustrate the probe initiated by the House of Representatives.
Reacting, Obaseki said he had nothing to do with the allegation, as he was only a shareholder sitting on the board of the company. He said the allegation was “one of those scams”.
“I do not have a case with the EFCC. I read the story. I am on the boards of several companies. This report is about a German company which owns rigs in Nigeria, and I sat on their board. They had a partner who died many years ago and his estate has not been properly managed, unfortunately.
“It is one of those scams; they wrote to the EFCC’s Committee on Public Prosecution. So, if someone owes you, is there not a civil process to go through? Why should it be an EFCC matter? But it has nothing to do with me. I didn’t manage the company; I am just a shareholder and on the board of the company. I didn’t take money from anybody.”
However, Orbih said Edo indigenes would not place the fate of the state in the hands of “fraudsters who are only interested in their personal aggrandisement”.
He said the party vowed to expose more documents of alleged fraudulent activities of the APC candidate “in collaboration with Adams Oshiomhole, to defraud Edo State.”
