The embattled former Chairman House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, Abdulmumin Jibrin, has been given extra policemen, it was learnt.
This is as his office at the National Assembly was sealed by the Department of State Security (DSS), Saturday.
The lawmaker, who is from Kano State, said on Saturday that he was provided additional security at the instance of his lawyers.
He said security around him was beefed up considering the wide ranging allegations against some of his colleagues including the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, on how they siphoned billions of nairn through 2016 budget padding.
Jibrin had over the weekend alleged that Dogara bribed nine other members of Appropriation Committee with $20,000 each to hold a press conference, in which they disassociated themselves from the claims of Jibrin.
Jibrin said the nine lawmakers who threw their support behind the Speaker in the budget padding scandal were induced with about $20,000 each.
According to Jibrin in a press statement noted that the lawmakers “agreed to participate in such a dishonourable press conference after shamelessly collecting” the money which was allegedly distributed to them two days earlier.
He said the lawmakers allegedly lied to cover up their conduct in the House, adding that they are “a disgrace to their constituents.”
In their press briefing Friday, the lawmakers dissociated themselves from Jibrin, saying his attempts to malaise Dogara and the entire House will fail.
“As Members of the Committee on Appropriation, we want to state categorically clear that the ousted Chairman’s action does not in any way reflect the position of the Committee. He has constantly allotted all the actions and decisions of the Committee to himself without conferring with the members.
“We wish to state that we totally disassociate ourselves with all the calculated plot to pull down the integrity of the Leadership and Members of the 8th House of Representatives,” the lawmakers said.
But in a fight back, Dogara said Jibrin concocted the alleged $20,000 bribe from the “figment of his imagination,” and calling his sanity into question.
“It is really shocking that this kind of despicable character could slip through the political process and become an Honourable member of the House of Representatives, a highly respected institution, where we all passed through.
“This has confirmed that Hon Abdulmumin Jibrin is a serial blackmailer, a man with the basest of motives, whose sanity has become questionable,” Dogara said in an email signed by his Deputy Chief of Staff, Cyril Maduabum.
“The Honourable Speaker is a decent man, a man of high intellect, integrity and character, who cannot descend to the gutter where Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin holds sway. He does not need to do so as the Honourable members are adults who can hold their own positions and can defend themselves.”
Jibrin and Dogara have been locked in a battle of wits since Jibrin was sacked as Appropriation Committee Chairman, with Jibrin alleging that the Speaker and some other officers of the House padded the 2016 budget.
Meanwhile, DSS on Saturday sealed the secretariat of the House Committee on Appropriation.
The closure marked the latest development in the ongoing political and media war between the Speaker, Dogara and Jibrin.
It was gathered that DSS officials stormed the secretariat, which serves as offices for the 40-member appropriation committee and its staff, and immediately placed it under lock and key.
The sources said the DSS also sealed Jibrin’s office at Room 1.05 in the New House of Representatives building.
Jibrin had reportedly visited the DSS Headquarters on Friday to brief the agency about the budget padding scandal rocking the House. He also called on EFCC and ICPC to commence investigation into the crisis with a view to prosecuting those involved.
