Kogi Jailbreak: Six Re-arrested

Six out of the 13 prisoners who escaped from the Koton-Karfe Prison in Kogi State, on Saturday morning, have been recaptured.
The Controller-General of Prisons, Ja’afaru Ahmed, who disclosed this on Sunday said that the six pre-trial detainees were recaptured with the assistance of other security agencies and local vigilante groups, noting that they had been returned to the prison.
This is even as two armed robbery convicts and 11 awaiting trial suspects were among the 13 inmates who escaped.
The inmates in one of the cells in the prison, were said to have dug a big hole in the wall of their cell to aid their escape.
The Controller-General, who visited the Koton-Karfe Prison on an on-the-spot assessment of the incident, confirmed that 13 inmates escaped from the prison, comprising 10 pre-trial detainees and three convicts, according to a statement by the Prison Service spokesman, Francis Enobore.
The Controller-General said he had set up a panel to carry out detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape and forward the report to his office for necessary action.
He gave the assurance that appropriate measures were being put in place to address congestion in prisons, particularly among awaiting trial prisoners in line with the reform agenda of the Federal Government.
Ahmed further stated that security arrangement is being strengthened in and around prison facilities across the country to forestall future recurrence.
It was gathered on Sunday that armed and conventional squads of the Nigeria Prison Service had launched manhunt to re-arrest the fleeing inmates.
The source added that the prison authorities also contacted the Police to assist it in tracking down the inmates some of who are facing trial for capital offences.
The 180-capacity all male prison facility inaugurated in 2014 had a population of 263 inmates as at the time of the latest jailbreak.
