Political parties in Oyo State have condemned the time table for the conduct of election into the 33 local government council areas and 35 development areas, describing it as a political abracadabra. The parties, Accord Party, Labour Party, SDP and others however, rejected the time table in its entirety, saying it’s impossible to work.
Oyo State Electoral Commission OYSEC had on Monday night released a time table for the local government election in the state, directing political parties to conduct primaries for the chairmen and councellors between November 16 and 19 while election comes up on February 12, 2017.
The State Secretary of Accord Party, Dr Nureni Adeniran described OYSEC as a joker, stressing that the time time table was not in tandem with commonsense. He noted with dismay the sudden release of the time table without carrying along the key stakeholders in the electoral process. He said it would be practically impossible for any party to organize primaries within such a short time frame. ‘’How can anybody organize a primary election within three days, does it make sense? He said nobody is aware of the number of wards in the state today with the creation of new Development Council areas. He queried the boundary delineations in the state with the advent of new development areas.
‘’We reject this time table and we urge OYSEC and APC to stop playing on the intelligence of the people of the state and other political parties’’. The Publicity Secratry of Alliance for Political Congress APC, Oladele Shadare said his party received the news of the time table release as a shock. ‘We received the news just like every other person. We thought it was a rumour until it became clear that it was true.’’ He said ‘’we had thought the electoral body would have called all the political parties in the state for a meeting where the time table would have been released in the presence of journalists’’. He said this would have saved the stakeholders the rude shock of suddenness of the announcement. He however, said APC would work with the government agency to ensure that the election was successful.
A chieftain of Labour Party in the state, Hon. Taiwo Ibrahim described the election time table as a Greek gift by the OYSEC. Describing it as a political abracadabra, Taiwo wondered why the electoral body acted unilaterally without any consultations with the stakeholders before hitting the airwaves with the announcement. He said the announcement came as a surprise. He added that the state’s electoral body was acting as if was a ghost. He said nobody even knew the electoral officers in each of the local government areas in the state. ‘’Who are the electoral officers in the local government areas; are they ghosts?
