One time presidential candidate of the defunct Alliance for Democracy (AD) and erstwhile Secretary to the Government of Nigeria, Chief Olu Falae, has warned that he would personally lead a protest against the Federal Government, if it goes ahead to fix prices for food commodities.
He said the proposed price control as been envisioned by Federal Government would not alleviate the suffering of the people, particularly farmers in the rural areas.
Falae, a former Minister for Finance said there was a need to allow market forces to determine prices of food and not for the government to fix prices for the farmers on farm produce.
The elder statesman stated this at a rural development forum, organised by Habitat Interest Enterprises in collaboration with All Farmers Congress of Nigeria in Akure, the Ondo State capital on Thursday.
Falae said: ”The government said recently that they wanted to make price control policy, if they start it, I will be the one to lead a protest against the policy. This is because the policy can never work and It will never work.
”We should allow market forces to determine the prices of food, government should not regulate the prices of farm produces.”
According to him, rather than fix prices for food commodities, government should regulate the prices of petrol, fertilizer, transportation and farm tools.
