A group under the aegis of Concern Sons and Daughters of Esan, in Edo Central Senatorial District of the state, have condemned the Marginalisation of the district over the impeachment of Speaker of the House of Assembly from the zone.
It has therefore threatened to shut down the state if the position of the Speaker was not reverted to the district.
The group made this known in a communiqué issued at the end of a meeting in Igueben Local Government Area of Edo and made available to newsmen in Benin on Tuesday.
In the communiqué signed by the convener of the meeting, Prince Roy Oribhabor, the group issued a 21-day ultimatum for the reversal of the post of Speaker back to a member from the district.
The Assembly had in August impeached the speaker, Dr Justin Okonoboh and other principal officers of the house over allegations of high handedness and other issues.
Okonoboh who is from the Esan extraction was replaced by Kabiru Adjoto, from Edo North senatorial district, same district where the Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu hails from.
The group noted that while the State Governor is from the South senatorial district, Central senatorial district is left with no major political position other than the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly.
The group subsequently issued the ultimatum to the House of Assembly to effect change of leadership to reflect the interest of Esan people.
“After the expiration of this ultimatum, if the House remains obstinate and recalcitrant to yield to our demand, we shall embark on massive protest to draw the attention of the world to the open demonstration of Marginalisation and oppression of our people.
“We shall occupy the House of Assembly till our demand is met and our interest is protected because the House is taking us for granted.
“We hereby call on Esan traditional rulers to mobilise their subjects to achieve this set goal of Esan people to support this struggle,” he said.
He also called on all Esan spiritual leaders to show concern and support in prayers to achieve the aim.
“We therefore call on Edo people not to forsake Esan people in this struggle to rewrite the wrong and injustice done to our people because an injury to one is an injury to us,” he added.
According to Oribhabor, the position of Speakership of the Assembly was zoned to the district to balance the political equation in the state.
“Any attempt to override us calls for serious concern from all well meaning persons in Edo state hence this call for planned protest.
“We equally call on the State Government and APC leadership to intervene before it gets out of hand,” he said.
Oribhabor said more than 20,000 signatories have been collected in support of the protest.
