Many people were killed on Sunday evening when suicide bombers detonated their explosives around Muna Garage General Area of Maiduguri metropolis of Borno state.
Muna garage has been a fearful area following incessant attacks and bombings by insurgents.
The area is located north east and about five kilometers drive to Maiduguri city which has witnessed series of deadly attacks by insurgents.
A police personnel attached to one of the Jere Division but is not authorized to talk the press in an interview told Vanguard newspaper in Maiduguri that “heavy explosions occurred around Muna Garrage at about 7pm with serious casualties on civilians and the suicide bombers
“Many were feared dead and injured and were evacuated from the scene”.
A renewed attacks by insurgents took place in surrounding villages of Borno and Yobe states in the last one week with killing of officers and men of the Nigerian Army in Sassawa village and other road ambushes which claimed many lives.
But the police said only two female suicide bombers were killed while trying to sneak into Maiduguri metropolis.
Victor Isuku, the Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident.
Isuku said that the incident occurred on Sunday evening along Maiduguri-Gamboru highway.
He said that one of the suicide bombers detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IEDs) strapped to her body and killed herself, while the other bomber was gunned down by security operatives before she detonated the bomb concealed to her body.
Isuku explained that the incident occurred at the outskirt of Maiduguri, adding that there were no casualties recorded in the incident.
“Preliminary information available to me indicates that two female suicide bombers tried to sneak into Maiduguri, one of them detonated the IED on her body and killed herself while the other one was gunned down.
“Police EOD teams have been deployed to the scene to sanitize the area,” he added.
