An unspecified number of people have been reportedly killed in the early hours of Saturday as four suicide bombers detonated explosives in Fori area behind Giwa Barracks in Maiduguri.
It was gathered that the suicide bombers, who arrived the area at about 6:50 am with Improvise Explosive Device, IEDs, strapped around their waist, were noticed by security personal and members of the civilian JTF around the area.
However, before they could be arrested, they fled into the crowd.
“One of the suicide bombers ran to where they were frying beans cake, popularly known as ‘akara’ and detonated the device, killing son of the woman, while anothe woman sustained injury,” Bashir, a resident of Giwa Barracks said.
Police public relations officer, DSP Victor Isuku, who confirmed the incident, added that anti-bomb squad and security operatives have been deployed to the volatile area to control the situation.
In a statement, Police said: “In the wee hours of today 18/11/2017, two female suicide bombers detonated their IED vests in the outskirt of Alakaramtii village in Jere LGA, killing themselves alone.
“Then at about 0650hrs, two other teenage female suicide bombers infiltrated Alakaramtii village. One of them hurriedly detonated her IED vest killing herself, her partner and an innocent boy while four others including the mother of the innocent boy, sustained injuries.
“The corpses and the injured have been evacuated to University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. The police EOD team promptly rendered safe the unexploded IED and sanitised the area. Normalcy has since been restored to the area.”
