Gambling: Man Commits Suicide After Losing his Boss’s Money to Gambling

Last week in Bayelsa State, Suga, an employee reportedly committed suicide, after losing his boss’s N150k to gambling.

The deceased staked the money on a virtual game which lasts less than two minutes and is controlled by computers.

The man who was identified simply as Suga used the money realized on the day of the incident to play the virtual game.

An eyewitness said “Suga’s devastation of not knowing how to explain the situation to his boss, made him commit suicide.”

This increases the number of people who have died from betting and gambling since last year in the state to three.

Bayelsa police spokesperson Asinim Butswat said though the police is aware of the incident, it has not been reported officially.

Butswat said “The Divisional Police Officer of Bassambri Nembe said the incident was not reported officially to the police. He, however, said they heard about the incident.”

The Street Journal had earlier reported that a young man named Samson reportedly committed suicide “overnight” due to unemployment.

Twitter user, Adedayo Ben Lanre, who is a cousin to the deceased, shared the sad news on Twitter.

“Today is the worst day of my life,” Lanre tweeted.

He added: “Not the best news to start the week… My closest cousin committed suicide overnight due to unemployment. Samson why?”

Unemployment rate in Nigeria increased to 23.10 percent in the third quarter of 2018 from 22.70 percent in the second quarter of 2018, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. In the third quarter of 2017, unemployment stood at 18.8 percent.
The rise in unemployment has fueled hopelessness, frustration, gambling and other vices among young Nigerians and sadly, has led to suicide of a young, promising man.

Meanwhile, Tragedy struck in Amekenu Oduma community of Enugu state after a lifeless body of a mother was found in a nearby bush.

According to reports, an Eyewitness who also hails from Amekenu Oduma revealed that the victim was discovered hanging from a tree and the reasons for taking her own life has been attributed to frustration.

It was also reported that a young man has reportedly committed suicide by hanging after losing a N22,000 sports bet.

The victim identified simply as Uchenna, is reported to have hung himself in his room along Abak road in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state.

Uchenna was described as a perpetual sports gambler and had collected his boss’ money for the bet in hopes of replacing it after his big win.

The deceased’s roommate, Ifiok, revealed that Uchenna had been bemoaning his loss, working himself into a frenzy over it.

Ifiok said, “I went out to buy something from Plaza (the city centre) and on getting back, I found that everywhere was locked.

“I knew Uchenna hadn’t gone out and I wondered what must have made him lock up himself. I tried to open the door for several minutes without success until I had to force it open.

“I then found him hanging from the ceiling fan in our room and his eyes had popped out.”
