Minister of Foreign Affairs Geoffrey Onyeama has tested positive for COVID-19, it was learnt.
Onyeama announced the result of his fourth test in a tweet on Sunday, which he posted at 1:38 pm. He said he was heading for isolation.
He said: “Did my fourth COVID-19 test yesterday at the first sign of a throat irritation and unfortunately this time it came back positive. That is life! Win some lose some. Heading for isolation in a health facility and praying for the best. #StayHomeSaveLives #COVID19 #PTFCOVID19”
President Muhmmadu Buhari has sent words of solidarity to Onyema, wishing him quick recovery from the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) infection.
Onyema, on Sunday disclosed his COVID-19 positive status after receiving his test result.
However, President Buhari, in a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, highlighted the hard work Onyema had been involved in as part of the national response against COVID-19.
“President Muhammadu Buhari wishes Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, quick recovery as he goes into isolation after testing positive to COVID-19 on Sunday.
‘President Buhari described the minister as a strong pillar of his administration, commending him for tirelessly working to stem the spread of coronavirus in the country as a member of the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19, and ensuring the safety of Nigerians abroad”, the statement said.
Quoting the President directly, the statement said “the country is eternally grateful to Geoffrey Onyeama for his diligence in attracting international support for Nigeria to defeat the coronavirus pandemic and boost the economy. I wish him speedy recovery”.
