Law enforcement officers and medics responded to the scene at 3pm and confirmed the fatality.
An investigation revealed the gun was owned by a family member and was thought to be unloaded and kept in a closet alongside another firearm.
There are no charges pending in connection to the self-inflicted fatal shooting, which appeared to be a ‘horrific accident,’ police said.
Regional School Unit 9 Superintendent Tina Meserve sent an email to parents on Wednesday notifying them of the tragic incident. She said counseling services are available for students and staff both in person at the school and via Zoom.
