Nigerian Halal stakeholders have held its first roundtable meeting to discuss the challenges and sustainability of the industry owing to its recognition.

Hosted by Halal Compliance and Food Safety (HaCFoS), the Webinar meeting featured representatives from Halal Certification Authority (HCA), Jaiz International Halal Certification and Halal Standard Development Trust (HASDAT).

The stakeholders spoke on challenges facing the industry among which are lack of unified halal standard and logo, inadequate professionals, lack of halal laboratory and proliferation of the Islamic scholar who arbitrarily issued halal logo to the manufacturers without following the global halal industry best practices.

HaCFoS’ representative, Dr. Salisu Adekunle said the purpose of the roundtable was to ensure better representation at the international level, coordination of the halal stakeholders’ activities and governance of the halal industry.

Adekunle emphasised the need for a clear road map for trade and economic benefit.

Dr. Abdullah Shuaib, a director at the Jaiz International Halal Certification, expressed concern over the lack of unified halal standard and logo, inadequate professionals and the need for proper training.

He emphasised the need for cooperation, solidarity and collaboration among the stakeholders adding that the stakeholders should always lend a helping hand to one another.

This, he said, would not only have a significant impact on the industry but ensure sustainable growth.

HASDAT’s Secretary, Sulaiman Olokodana, said lamented the lack of halal laboratory.

Prof Ibrahim Oreagba presented activities of the HCA which majorly focused on halal certification.

He gave numbers of products from both national and multinational companies certified.
