There were a lot of surprises in the 2020 election, but perhaps one the most unexpected developments is that Steve Kornacki achieved a bit of fashion icon status.
The 41-year-old NBC and MSNBC National Political Correspondent was on many Americans’ screens as results came in, updating viewers with his trusty red and blue electoral map.
But while stress may have been running high throughout his election coverage, viewers appear to have seen at least one thing on screen that they really liked: Kornacki’s Gap khakis, which have seen a significant sales spike.
What a look! Steve Kornacki, the 41-year-old NBC and MSNBC National Political Correspondent, has become an unlikely fashion icon thanks to his Gap khakis
Driving sales: A Gap spokesperson said the khakis saw a ‘dramatic increase in online traffic’ and within one day, ‘we saw around 90 per cent unit sale increase online’
The journalist’s dark khakis clearly captured the fashion fancy of viewers — including a fellow journalist from New York magazine, who emailed Kornacki’s producer, Adam Noboa, to ask an important Election Day question: ‘Who is he wearing?’
Noboa confirmed that the khakis were from Gap, and New York magazine managed to track them down to the Modern Khaki style in palomino brown.
The pants, which retail for $59.95, are highly-rated by reviewers on the Gap website.
And yesterday, a Gap spokesperson told the Today show that there was a major uptick in traffic and sales after Kornacki wore them.
The spokesperson said there was a ‘dramatic increase in online traffic’ and within one day, ‘we saw around 90 per cent unit sale increase online.’
Kornacki also confirmed that he has multiple pairs, saying on-air on Wednesday: ‘I’ve got a bunch of them.’

The political expert also earned praise from fashionistas, with Women’s Wear Daily titling an election-themed roundup: ‘All Hail Kornacki’s Khakis.’
‘In a sea of perfectly tailored suits, the one who is getting all the attention this week is Kornacki, clad in Gap khakis,’ they wrote.
‘His look is very casual Friday Nineties redux and his average joe outfits, together with pen and calculator, have created a wave of thirst. Kornacki’s khakis are the saving grace of this week.’
Others have chimed in to discuss the khakis on Twitter.
‘When this is finally all over, let’s crowd-fund Steve Kornacki a life-time supply of khakis. Or Khornakis? (sorry, I might need a break from the vote counts),’ Ariana Huffington wrote.
‘Just wanted to say to @SteveKornacki, thanks for making palomino brown cool again. Big fan, and it’s been too long! As soon as it is safe to report to work in person again, I pledge to sport mine proudly (assuming they still fit #quarantine15,’ a viewer chimed in.
Popular: Social media users have gone wild for the look and think he should be a Gap spokesperson
‘Let’s be honest at this point we gotta figure Steve sleeps in khakis. Those are his lounge khakis,’ another chimed in.
‘The Gap should have Steve be a spokesperson for Kornacki Khakis,’ one more suggested.
‘If some brand doesn’t do a collab with @SteveKornacki around a new line of khakis that you can stand in for 72 hours straight (make the message about durability and practicality, but make it fashion), and call it the “Kornacki Khaki,” I will riot,’ tweeted another.
Kornacki’s tie, meanwhile, has seen better days. Yesterday he took to Twitter to share a photo of the torn accessory, explaining that it had been held together by staples until the last minute.
‘Against all odds, the staples held through the election, but now I think the time has come to finally retire my tie,’ he said.
