Teni and Adaora in Ade Bakare Couture for Battleground

You know the saying that style is a way to say who you really are without having to speak? This seems to be the case with the Nigeria fashion, which has evolved over the years. Today, creative indigenous fashion designers are using unparalleled local textiles to make outfits that speak volume even in the global fashion world.

For Nigerians, especially women who reckons with elegance, the name Ade Bakare seamlessly comes to mind. The London-based fashion designer is known for his use of couture fabrics, organzas, chiffons, and gazars in rich colours, to design for the most stylish and polished ladies. Just recently, the designer was engaged to design gorgeously classy costumes for some of the cast members of TV series, The Battleground.

With target to design elegant and alluring clothes befitting for a billionaire’s wife and daughter in the series, the Fashion Degree holder from the University College, Manchester, ensured the character ‘Adaora’ played by Shaffy Bello, and ‘Teni’ played by Ini Dima-Okojie, complement their roles with elegantly crafted dresses, affirming the saying that ‘you can have anything you want in life if you dress for it.’

According to the producer of the series Zuri24 Media, they wanted Ade Bakare, who has gained a lot of experience creating costume designs for films in London where he set up his fashion couture line in 1991, to recreate fashionable African designs that reflect reality for the series.

Describing the venture into costume designing, Ade Bakare, who designed the clothes for the British – Nigerian actress, Caroline Chikezie, among others, for her role in the film entitled, SPIN, produced by Dapo Oshinyemi in 1998, said, “it was such an eye- opener being part of, and learning how clothes and films worked in unison. In designing for characters you have to understand their roles and design accordingly, to get an authentic feel.

“So with the first series of The Battleground in 2017, we reflected the beauty of African textiles with emphasis on Nigerian fabrics for the actresses we designed for. We used a lot of vintage Aso Oke sourced at the local markets as far away as Ijebu-Ode and Abeokuta. I found the old styles of Aso Oke very intricate with more attention to detail than is the norm nowadays. We bought old wrappers and head-ties, which provided lots of yardage for us to design beautiful creations. Adire and Ankara also featured prominently.”

Due to the success of the first Battleground series, Ade Bakare was again approached to design costumes for the second and final series. However, this time, he was asked to design for more cast members. Characters such as ‘Hadiza’ played by Brikiya Graham-Douglas and ‘Mimi’ played by Meg Otanwa. Those who have watched the series would know that Bakare made some cameo appearances, playing himself.
