Former Governor of old Kano Retired Colonel Sani Bello has explained why he decided to give up normal birthday celebrations for medical outreaches.

The decision, he said, was to put smiles on the faces of the less privileged.

Bello said that celebrating his birthday with the creme of the society will not bring him much joy like celebrating with the less privileged.

Bello spoke after a visit to the surgical theatre at the General Hospital Kontagora where operations were being carried out on beneficiaries of the free surgical outreach he sponsored to commemorate his 78th birthday.

The former Nigerian High Commissioner to Zimbabwe said: “It is my passion to give to the less privileged. If I had a party, it will only be attended by the creme of society but I have decided to give this birthday party to all the people in my locality.

“You can see that only those who are sick are here, this is my birthday gift to them.

“I feel happy seeing smiles on their faces. This is the reason why I decided to give up normal celebrations of birthdays and embark on medical outreaches like this one.

“This is one of the most prominent medical outreaches because it coincides with my birthday. That is why it is special. It is my way of thanking God for sparing my life long enough to witness this year.”
