The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has made a significant breakthrough in the fight against the illegal drug trade in the Federal Capital Territory by seizing over N107 million worth of illicit and dangerous drugs from various motor parks and markets across Abuja.
In a statement released on Thursday, May 30, on X (Twitter), NAFDAC explained that its Investigation and Enforcement Federal Task Force Directorate, acting on intelligence provided by the Department of State Services (DSS), carried out targeted raids over two days.
The operations focused on drug hawkers operating in Area 1 Motor Park, Dunamis Market Garki, Zuba Market, Nyanya Motor Park, and Asokoro.
During these raids, the team apprehended twenty suspects and confiscated over 50 different types of illegal and dangerous drugs.
The seized items included high-dose Tramadol 225mg, Rohypnol, Diazepam, Cod Amol, various aphrodisiacs, and codeine syrups, with an estimated street value exceeding N107 million.
The coordinated operation, led by the Kaduna and Abuja I&E/FTF offices, is part of NAFDAC’s ongoing initiative to eradicate illegal drug hawking from public spaces and to enhance public safety.
“The arrested individuals are currently under investigation, and all confiscated products will be destroyed,” the statement read.
In a related development, NAFDAC highlighted a previous collaborative effort in May with the Nigerian Army’s 15 Field Engineering Regiment in Badagry, which resulted in the dismantling of an illegal alcohol manufacturing factory.
This factory, located at No. 24, MTN Road, Badagry, was operated by an individual named Chinedu Okafor.
The May operation targeted Okafor’s residence, where he was found to be running an illicit drinks manufacturing business.
This raid highlights NAFDAC’s broader commitment to clamping down on all forms of illegal drug and substance manufacturing and distribution across Nigeria.
