Six people have lost their lives and nine others sustained serious injuries in a crash at Ibeju Bus Stop along the Lekki–Epe Expressway in Lagos State.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, confirmed the tragedy on Monday, explaining that the accident happened when a truck crashed into a commercial bus.

Those killed were identified as two men, three women, and a child. Four additional passengers managed to escape unharmed.

Preliminary findings indicated that the collision involved a blue Volvo FL6 truck transporting wooden planks and a white commercial bus with registration number AKD 336 YD.

“The nine injured survivors were swiftly extricated by LASTMA officials with support from other emergency responders and immediately conveyed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Epe and Hammond Hospital for urgent medical attention,” LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, said.

He said the bodies of the deceased had been taken to the Federal Medical Centre morgue in Epe for identification by relatives. The four passengers who escaped without injury were attended to on the spot by the LASTMA Rescue Unit, working alongside officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, LNSC.

The coordinated response facilitated a swift evacuation of victims and helped restore order at the accident scene.

LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, extended condolences to the bereaved families while voicing concern over the frequent cases of reckless driving on Lagos roads. He reminded motorists that excessive speed remains a leading cause of fatal crashes, stressing that speed thrills but kills.

He further appealed to drivers to stay alert, comply with traffic regulations, and avoid distractions, particularly during the Ember Months, a period often associated with a rise in road accidents.
