The Benue state government, on Sunday, June 25, paid the salaries of civil servants within the state for the first time in the last seven months.
Tersoo Kula, chief press secretary to the governor of Benue state, while confirming the development on Monday, June 26, said that the workers were paid their salaries for the month of May on Sunday.
Kula noted that June’s salary will also be paid “very soon.”
He noted that, “The previous administration was owing salaries for several months.
“Workers in the state have not received any salary this year.
“Even though it’s the previous administration that owes the money, Governor Hyacinth Alia understands that the civil servants worked for this money.
“Once we pay the salary for June, we will look at the papers so we can come up with what to do about the other months owed,” he added.
Some of the workers, while confirming the development on Monday afternoon, said that it felt so good to get paid after working without pay for the past seven months.
A civil servant within the state noted that, “I feel so happy with the payment of this one month salary.
“I got an alert at about 8 pm on Sunday, and my spirit has come alive again.
“The situation was so bad before now such that I had to park my car and trek to work.
“I’m not the only one excited, everyone in my office feels good too and those who haven’t been coming to work came to work today,” he added.
