President Goodluck Jonathan has announced the renaming of the University of Lagos (UNILAG). The institution will henceforth be known as Moshood Abiola University. The announcement was made during a nationwide broadcast to mark Nigeria’s Democracy Day. The institution was renamed in honour of the late Bashorun MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

While speaking on national television on Tuesday morning, President Jonathan said “the Federal Government has decided that the Late Chief MKO Abiola should be honoured. In honour of Chief MKO Abiola, the University of Lagos is renamed the Moshood Abiola University”.  Abiola became a symbol of democracy after the annulment of the election and his subsequent detention.

The announcement has however generated protests as students of the university trooped out to exercise their grievance over the renaming of the institution.
