A man identified as Olalekan Ogunmakin, 61, lost his life after tyres that detached from a moving truck crushed him to death in the Alaka area of Lagos State.
It was gathered on Thursday, May 30, that Ogunmakin, who was attached to the office of the Lagos Waste Management Authority in Ijora, was heading to a location in the state when the tyres from the truck rammed into him on Monday, May 27.
It was said that the impact of the collision caused Ogunmakin to sustain varying degrees of injury, leaving him lying motionless on the ground.
In a bid to rescue him, bystanders at the scene of the accident rushed to his aid and transported him to a hospital.
A source, who requested anonymity for fear of victimization, said the truck driver did not stop to check on Ogunmakin’s condition.
The source added that when the LAWMA official was taken to the hospital, the attending doctor confirmed him dead.
“The man (Ogunmakin) was attached to the LAWMA office. He was going somewhere when the tyres from the truck, which was at top speed, ran into him. The truck driver did not wait; some people said he knew what happened while others said he might not have known because the truck continued moving on its other tyres. When people in the area rushed him to the hospital, he was confirmed dead due to the injuries he sustained from the accident,” the source said.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that Ogunmakin was rushed to Randle Hospital in the Surulere area of the state following the accident.
He explained that the doctor on duty confirmed Ogunmakin dead and added that efforts are ongoing to arrest the fleeing truck driver.
